ID

Went to a home for the intellectually disabled recently.
The nurse kept reminding me how fortunate we are, to be normal, to be speaking well, to be walking well
I looked around the room and there they were, the elderly, engaging in simple manipulative activities, throwing and catching of ball and learning how to dress up.
Such simple things which we have learnt when we are young and take for granted.
Speaking can be a mean feat for them as they struggle to understand and process and also communicate their thoughts.

This old man who is considered high functioning was playing with LEGO blocks. He wanted the blocks across the table so he said, 'Lego, lego,' while reaching for it. The nurse brought it over to his side, took a red coloured Lego.

Nurse: What is this?
Man: Red colour
Nurse: Yes I know this is red colour, but what is the name of it?
Man: Red colour
Nurse: /takes a blue block/ What colour is this?
Man: Red colour

It made me laugh for a while but also think.
Let's all just cherish what we are given and have, instead of asking for more.
